E-scooter on the road: what do you need to know?

Electric scooters have become a familiar sight on the streets. They’re convenient, fast, and often fun to ride. But did you know that there are clear rules you must follow when riding an e-scooter on public roads? Below, we’ve listed the most important ones for you.

Minimum age

Not everyone knows this, but since July 2022 you must be at least 16 years old to ride an e-scooter. Riding on the sidewalk is no longer allowed — you must use the bike path if there is one, or the roadway if there isn’t. If you’re riding through a pedestrian zone where bicycles are allowed, you must ride at walking speed.

Maximum speed

The maximum speed for an e-scooter without a seat is (for now) 25 km/h. Going faster isn’t possible and is prohibited on public roads. There are plans to lower the limit to 20 km/h, but this rule has not yet been approved.

Passengers

Carrying passengers is not allowed, no matter how tempting it may seem. You can’t ride with two people on one scooter.

Visibility

The same visibility rules apply as for cyclists: in fog or at night, you need a white or yellow light in front and a red light at the back. A helmet and fluorescent vest are not (yet) mandatory, but they are strongly recommended. Authorities are also considering tightening these rules in the future.

Parking

You may only park your e-scooter in designated areas or on the sidewalk, as long as you don’t block the way. Always pay attention to local signs.

Insurance

Good to know: an e-scooter without a seat does not need to be registered, and insurance is not mandatory. However, it’s always a good idea to check how well you’re covered for damage to third parties, as accidents can happen quickly. A hospitalization, accident, or family liability insurance policy might also come in handy.
